A Cohesive Look that you Both Like
When I got married to my husband, we were very fortunate that we both liked the Santa Fe look. As many years passed and we traveled a great deal to Santa Fe, we filled our home with beautiful art work; rugs, paintings, ceramics and furniture.
Of course, when we moved, we had to agree on paint choices for the walls and the exterior. I gambled a lot of times with #SherwinWilliams paint chips and failed miserably and had to repaint or, for the most part, was fortunate that we both liked the choices. It was fairly easy for us to both like the results.
Many times, though, couples have differing design choices or come from different cultures or backgrounds that keep them from having an easy time of choosing decor or an overall style. Here are tips that may smooth the path for a cohesive look that you can both like.
Tips for Couples
- Have honest and open communication
- Respect differences
- Try for a shared vision
- Identify deal breakers
- Listen and ask questions
- Find Common Ground
- Blend your styles – mix and match
- Concentrate on functional elements first (couch, coffee table)
- Establish must haves vs nice haves
- Establish strategies for collaboration
- Set up a #Pinterest board
- Unify with a color scheme (each pick an option that blends)
- Make the process fun
- Shop together for art and furniture
- Embrace your creative freedom
- Hire a professional to make it more fun, especially if you can’t agree with each other
